Which type of wood is best for braais and which is best for heating?

For braais, dense hardwoods like Sekelbos, Kameeldoring, or Bushveld mixes are ideal. They burn hotter, longer, and produce minimal smoke, giving your food that perfect, natural smoky flavour. For heating indoors, choose properly seasoned hardwoods that provide a steady, long-lasting burn with minimal smoke. Softwoods burn quickly and can create creosote buildup, so they’re not recommended for indoor use. Always use dry, chemical-free, sustainably sourced wood for the best results.

How should I store my wood and charcoal?

To keep your wood and charcoal in top condition, store them in a dry, ventilated area. Keep them off the ground and protected from rain or moisture, as wet wood burns poorly and produces more smoke. For charcoal, a sealed container or covered area works best to maintain dryness. Proper storage ensures clean burning, longer-lasting fires, and better performance every time.

Charcoal vs briquettes – which should I use?
It depends on what you’re looking for:

  • Lumpwood charcoal is all-natural, burns hotter, and gives a flavourful, authentic braai experience.
  • Briquettes provide a consistent, steady heat and are ideal if you want predictable cooking times or longer fires without constant tending.

Both are made from sustainably sourced Namibian hardwood and are chemical-free, so you can choose based on your cooking style and convenience.

What does “sustainably sourced” mean?

“Sustainably sourced” means our wood and charcoal come from responsibly managed forests or woodlands, where harvesting is controlled to allow natural regeneration. We focus on using dense, renewable Namibian hardwoods, often removing invasive bush species while supporting local communities and biodiversity. By choosing sustainably sourced products, you enjoy a chemical-free, eco-friendly fire while protecting Namibia’s natural landscapes.
